EXCAVATION
The first step to any long-lasting interlock project is proper excavation. We remove the top layer of soil to create a clean foundation for your driveway, walkway, or patio. Most residential interlock installations require 8–12 inches of excavation, depending on soil conditions and the area being built. Removing enough depth is essential — it prevents future sinking, shifting, and water issues. This step ensures we’re building on solid, undisturbed ground rather than on soft topsoil that can settle over time.
BASE PRPERATION
A strong foundation is what makes interlock outperform concrete and asphalt. After excavation, we install a base made from ¾” crushed stone (also called Granular A) in layers, compacting each layer with a heavy plate compactor. A typical base is 6–8 inches thick, but for driveways or high-traffic areas, we may go thicker for added strength. Proper compaction is crucial — it keeps the stones locked together so your interlock stays level, strong, and stable for many years. This step is where many cheaper companies cut corners, but it’s exactly where Interlox puts in the extra time and care.
Once the crushed stone base is complete, we add a thin layer of limestone screenings on top. This layer allows us to fine-tune the surface, ensuring the final grade is perfectly smooth, level, and ready for installation. Screenings also help create a tight, precise bedding layer so each stone sits properly and the entire surface remains even over time. This combination of crushed stone and screenings is a proven method for achieving both durability and a clean, professional finish.

GRADING & DRAINAGE
Once the base is installed, we shape and grade it to control drainage. This means setting the correct slope so water moves away from your home, garage, or foundation. For most spaces, we aim for a 2% slope — enough for proper drainage without being noticeable. We check elevations carefully, using string lines, laser levels, and proper measuring tools to ensure the final surface won’t hold water or create puddles. Good drainage is one of the biggest factors in preventing erosion, heaving, and long-term shifting, we take this step very seriously.

INSTALLATION
INTERLOCK INSTALLATION
With the base prepared, we begin installing your chosen interlocking stone. This is where design and craftsmanship come together. We follow your chosen layout, whether it's a herringbone pattern, linear modern design, or a classic staggered look. We cut stones cleanly along edges and curves for a perfect fit around gardens, steps, and pathways. Each stone is placed carefully to maintain tight joints and straight, consistent lines. Once installed, we compact the surface again so each stone settles securely into place. This creates the smooth, durable finish interlock is known for.
POLYMERIC SAND
After the stones are set, we sweep in polymeric joint sand — a special sand that hardens when activated with water. This sand fills the joints between the stones and helps prevent shifting, weed growth, and insect movement. Once the sand is evenly installed, we use a compactor to vibrate it into the joints for a permanent hold. Proper sanding is what gives interlock its long-term stability and keeps your surface looking neat and tightly finished.
